Description from Publisher:
People keep dying around Harper MacLain. Try as she might, she can’t stop bad things from happening to those she loves. When her closely guarded secret lands her in the middle of her ex-boyfriend’s investigation, she’s in over her head. She hates that Detective Lucas Sullivan is in her life again, tempting her to fall back into bad habits…and his bed.

When Harper left him, Lucas tried not to care, burying himself in his job instead. Then Harper became the job. Now they’re on the run, and all he can think about is keeping her safe…and his hands off her. Lucas knows she's the key to solving his case, if he can keep them alive long enough to do it. And that's the trick...because falling in love can kill you.

My Musings:
This is the second book in the Unlikely Hero series, and is a standalone, but I think that reading the first book would make this one a bit less confusing at first, since this is another piece to the puzzle we are introduced to in "Betrayed By a Kiss".

There is a lot of mystery to be unraveled with this story, and it's got fantastic twists and turns that you won't see coming!

Harper is the sister of an ex-cop who got himself thrown into the middle of a seriously tangled web of corrupt cops and corporations. She is a bit naive, and apparently had a part to play in all of it that was more involved than innocent bystander. She had dated Lucas, a cop at the same precinct her brother used to work at, until they decided that things would never work for them and went their separate ways.

Lucas is working the case to try to figure out which cops are the dirty ones, while also trying to protect the people he isn't supposed to care about (ahem, like Harper).

The world in this series is visceral and gritty and pretty darn fun for the genre. And the romance is definitely not ignored, which some serious heat (and heart!) between our two main characters.

About the Author: Kris Rafferty
Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, I am the youngest of four in a rambunctious Irish-American family. I became obsessed with books young, and still retain an image in my mind of the first book I took out of the library. I completed my first short story during “rest period” in first grade, first novel at eighteen, first rejection at eighteen…it took me a long time to believe I could be a writer, and longer to convince anyone else. Meanwhile, I filled the time earning my BA at U/Mass Boston, married the love of my life (who is also the baby of his family), had three perfect children (that I could wax poetic about for days, and often do), and got my third degree black belt in Parker Kenpo Karate (a life-changing event that took over a decade of challenging my mind and body). I’m a staunch advocate for people empowering themselves, emotionally and physically, to be their best selves, to not rely on others to keep them safe in a world that is not safe. And I believe creating/playing music is the closest thing to creating life that doesn’t eventually lead to diapers and drool. I play classical piano, love summer road trips, am a fanatic for warm water ocean, and one of my favorite things to do is to say I’ll start exercising tomorrow.

Description from Publisher:
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Katee Robert continues her smoking-hot series about the O'Malleys-wealthy, powerful, and full of scandalous family secrets.

Greed. Ambition. Violence. Those are the "values" Olivia Rashidi learned from her Russian mob family-and the values she must leave behind for the sake of her daughter. When she meets Cillian O'Malley, she recognizes the red flag of his family name . . . yet she still can't stop herself from seeing the smoldering, tortured man. To save her family, Olivia sets out to discover Cillian's own secrets, but the real revelation is how fast-and how hard-she's falling for him.

Plagued by a violent past, Cillian is more vulnerable than anyone realizes. Anyone except Olivia, whose beauty, compassion, and pride have him at "hello," even if she's more inclined to say good-bye to an O'Malley. While his proposal of sex with no strings seems simple, what he feels for her isn't, especially after he learns that she belongs to a rival crime family. Cillian knows that there is no escape from the life, but Olivia may be worth trying-and dying-for . . .

My Musings:
What a great addition to the O'Malley series!!

Like the first two in the series, this is a standalone novel and can absolutely be enjoyed without having read about the other O'Malley siblings. However, having read the second book and now the third, I do feel that it was more enjoyable already knowing some of the side characters and what has happened to Cillian up to the beginning of this story. But I still haven't read the first book in the series and love what I've read, so they are definitely standalone.

Cillian's story is less gritty than it's predecessor, having a little less of a focus on the organized crime families and, I feel, more of a focus on the couple and both of them not wanting their 'families' ruling their lives. Olivia doesn't even acknowledge her own affiliation with New York's Russian OC family to Cillian for most of the book, though she struggles with aspects of it throughout. This story was one more about being on the fringe of organized crime, than necessarily part of it.

There was still a healthy amount of action and suspense in this, and you really wanted Sergei, Olivia's ex, to get his at some point. He was seriously unlikeable, which was perfect. Olivia's daughter was a cute addition, and Olivia being a single mother was a new angle for the series. Olivia herself was a bit naive at times, but I still really liked her. And Cillian, who I didn't get to know very well in the second book, definitely grew on me more and more.

These two aren't really about Romance, exactly, but their love feels genuine and they can really steam up an alley or two!

About Katee Robert
Katee Robert learned to tell stories at her grandpa’s knee. Her favorites then were the rather epic adventures of The Three Bears, but at age twelve she discovered romance novels and never looked back.

Though she dabbled in writing, life got in the way—as it often does—and she spent a few years traveling, living in both Philadelphia and Germany. In between traveling and raising her two wee ones, she had the crazy idea that she’d like to write a book and try to get published.

Her first novel was an epic fantasy that, God willing, will never see the light of day. From there, she dabbled in YA and horror, before finally finding speculative romance. Because, really, who wouldn’t want to write entire books about the smoking-hot relationships between two people?

She now spends her time—when not lost in Far Reach worlds—playing imaginary games with her wee ones, writing, ogling men, and planning for the inevitable zombie apocalypse.
